I had a resource which was overallocated but when i inserted a column called overallocated, it showed as no, even for the activities that the resource was overallocated. why was that?

The overallocated field added to a task view simply notes whether the resource is assigned above their maximum units to that task. For example, you have Resource1 max units 50% and you have that resource assigned to a single task at 55%. The Overallocated field will show "yes".

In the Task Form at the bottom is the best method of assigning resources and viewing assignment units.
