Power Point 2003 unable to open embedded file

Hi,
in my PPT 2003 on Xp with Service Pack 2 I can't open some embedded file (pdf, xls, etc). It appears the following message:

The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an unknown error.
You may need to reinstall the server application

In some articles the problem is referred to Norton Antivirus, but I never had this software on my pc. What can I do in order to remove the problem?
