converting images/bitmaps to something editable

hi

does anyone know how i might break down a map of southeast asia so i can separate the countries; ie, make it editable and subject to the usual powerpoint capabilities? i have jpeg and emf material but when i insert it into powerpoint 2010 and go to 'ungroup', there's nothing to ungroup.

You are not able to ungroup it because the source file was not made up of grouped items.
It would take a lot of manual work to break down the map to create sections but it could be done with something like Paintbrush.
