Default H.264 Compatible movie

We ran into a problem with a .wmv movie in PPT. It was set to automatically advance at the end, but the last second was getting clipped. H.264 was not listed in the approved media compression list that we saw, but we used it anyhow. It worked. Question: Why isn't H.264 listed in the Microsoft list of approved (recommended) media? BTW, we programmed on MAC with PPT 2010 and saved as PPT 1997-2004 PPT. It was being tested on a PC.
