Default Another way to introduce incremental text highlights other than copying slides over and over again

Good morning all,

I have put together a slideshow presentation to be used as a user manual for an internal Excel model. The user manual is essentially an SOP containing instructions on how to use the Excel model i.e. what steps to take, in which order etc.

In the slideshow, I have a slide with instructions. A single slide may contain up to five main steps, each of which is broken down into 10 smaller steps. So a single slide may contain between 50 - 100 steps detailing the workflow process.
The document is meant to be viewed as a slideshow (rather than a readable document - I believe this is more engaging), so in an attempt to make it more engaging, I have incorporated the following feature:

(1) A single slide containing the first batch of instructions is shown for 3 seconds
(2) The next slide is an exact copy of the first slide, with yellow highlights over the very first instruction. The yellow highlight draws the users' attention to this first step, indicating that this is the first step that needs to be taken
(3) The next slide is an exact copy of the second slide, with yellow highlights over both the first and second instructions. This draws the users' attention to the second step they must take.

And so on and so forth. This process repeats 50 - 100 times; a slide, containing the exact same text, is copied 50 - 100 times, changed only to include more yellow highlights on the next instructions, until all instructions have been highlighted. Then, the same process repeats for the next batch of instructions.

Not only is this making the file size incredibly large, but if I want to slightly amend the layout of one single instruction slide, I find I have to make the changes 50 - 100 times (on each variation of the slide).

Is there a way of either making text changes on multiple slides at once, or introducing the incremental, yellow highlights on a single slide (rather than having a separate slide each time I want to introduce an additional highlight)?

There is no way to animate "real" highlights BUT if you create shapes that look like a highlight (maybe 30% transparent yellow box or a heavy red outline and no fill) then these can be animated to appear / disappear.
