Unhappy Can't remove animation effects from a slide

I'm finding it impossible to remove animations from powerpoint slides. I suspect the reason is that I set animations in my master slide, and then imported a slide deck, thus setting animations on for every slide. There are several websites explaining how to remove animations but none of them are working for me. In particular, I can't select "None" in the animation menu, because it's grayed out.

I've attached a sample slide. If you run a slideshow on it, you'll see that things are out of order, and I'm unable to (easily) fix this. Which is why I want to give up and simply unanimate it. If somebody could explain the steps required, I'd really appreciate it.
