Default incompatible graphic format for Powerpoint 2008?

I have several versions of Powerpoint on several different Macs. I notice that on Powerpoint 2007, one particular image in a file I have is rendered poorly. Sort of pixellated. The image looks great on more recent Powerpoint versions. This is on a file that I was sent, and the person who produced it doesn't remember what kind of graphic file was used for that image.

What graphic file formats are rendered poorly on PP2007 that are rendered well on later versions?

I've never seen anything like this before.

I would be guessing but I would say an EPS often renders badly since the screen shows a low-res bitmap and the format behind it prints in high resolution.

However, the file format of pptx is actually a zip file and you can open it with a zip tool and look inside and see all the graphics sitting in a folder. I don't know how you do this on a Mac but it is pretty simple on a PC. If the graphic came from a PC originally, you might be able to figure out the graphic format by its file extension.

That's interesting, though because of security issues, I believe EPS support has been turned off in most Office implementations. You can't put an EPS image in a Powerpoint document anymore.
