Help with Powerpoint rule line break issue
Hi all, I am having problems with a line break issue in Powerpoint. Basically, a line keeps breaking early due to setting on the ruler which I can't change. The attached image probably explains it better .... any help really appreciated. Thanks! |

They are not line breaks but tab stops they show where pressing TAB will take the text. They can be dragged on the ruler or set in Paragraph > TABS.
First though try Typing Property: press TAB ONCE and then the name then TAB again and type text. |

Hi, thanks for your help. I tried the solution outlined but it didn't work. As soon as I TAB the second time, it takes any text I type past the tab stop and onto the next line.
I've tried to clear tab stops in the Para>TABS menu but it doesn't seem to actually do that. Even when I select the text, the stops don't disappear from the ruler and the text still breaks into the next line. I can - as you point out - drag a tab stop along the ruler to the right in an attempt to widen the margin, but when I do that, all the tab stops move, which effects the starting point of the line... |

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. I've read through the link you posted but haven't had any luck.
Are you sure those vertical bars are tab stops? I can't manipulate them like tab stops - i.e. drag them down to remove them or double click them. The only thing I can do is drag them horizontally but this effects all of them - I can't just drag one to extend a line margin. When I try to clear all tabs in the Para menu, it has no effect on them, which makes me wonder if they are stops. I also notice when I toggle through tab types with the tab icon, the 'bar tab' type (which these look like) isn't within the different types that cycle through.... Bemused. Have you tried setting the right margin of the text box to zero?
(Right-click text box > Format Shape > Shape Options > Size & Properties > Text Box > Right margin) |

Yes, I checked and the margins are already at zero. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The black lines are the DEFAULT tabs. They are not straightforward to remove! Not even sure if this is the correct method but it works for me.
View > Slide Master Select the text for level 1 in the large master (not the smaller layouts) In Paragraph > Tabs set the Default tab Stop to a value greater than the slide width and OK out. You should then be able add your own tabs. |

Thanks...
Hi, thanks again. Good to know they are default stops and good to know others find them hard to get rid of!
I tried your suggestion and have been able to clear them, which is great for new docs but not ideal for the completed presentation I'm working on, as I just wanted to a clear a single stop which was causing a line break. Anyway, now I know how to monkey around with Slide Master to remove, so I'll see what I can do from there.... thanks v much for the multiple assists. Last edited by GwenB; 08-06-2018 at 08:59 PM.
