Default PowerPoint - selective animation of a single word?

I want to have a highlighting (emphasis) animation on a single word or phrase in a text box in a PowerPoint slide. Trying to do that, it applies the animation to the entire text-box object.

I have seen a history of questions on this, with the basic answer of "not possible", and various workarounds of overlays, separate text boxes, etc.

Is it still the case that in PPt 2013 one cannot do this? Or in newer versions?
