Slide numbers don't match inserted slide numbers

this might be confusing but bear with me. On my deck, ppt starts with slide zero, I know that you can change that - but when I change it to slide 1, then I actually go to the deck and click "insert" - the deck doesn't update the inserted number to match the physical number of the slide, I have two title slides in the first 4 slides and there's no number on the title slides, so the slide that is physically 4th has a number 2 on it. Is there a way to have the slides numbered 1,2,3 etc, and have the inserted numbers match them?
