Default How do I tell which objects will move when I align them?

As a graphic designer, I like when my objects are all aligned well on my slide. However, sometimes I would like to move 1 or more objects to align with another object I've already placed in the correct location. Does anybody know how PowerPoint decides to move one item to align with another, or vice versa, or even decides to move both to meet in the middle? I would figure they'd write the code such that the object that was selected first is moved to align with the latter (or the last in the case of more than 2 aligned objects), but this doesn't always seem to be the case.

Is there any way to anchor an object on the slide, such that any other objects that are set to align with it are the ones that move, and the anchored object stays fixed in it's position on the slide? Thanks in advance!
