I'm not really a Mac specialist BUT
If you had a non subscription version previously it can be difficult to remove the license information in mac office and you will keep getting the old version back Google for completely remove mac office 2016 and carefully do EVERYTHING. There are also mac programs to completely remove programs but again I am no expert. AppZapper comes to mind but i haven't used it and it is not free.
