Default Why Won't My Animated Text Appear on a Running Video Background?

I have a running video background. It is an mp4. I tried to make text fade in over the video, but only the vid plays; the text will not appear.
I tried using the video converter (Wise Video Converter) to change the vid file extension to .wmv, but apparently the trial period had run out, and I could not get it to output. Nor could I highlight the text and bring to front. Nothing. Also, could someone recommend a good, free video converter?

Maybe these strange circumstances might lend a clue as to what is/is not happening:
A. I typically use blank slides, but they appear with this woven texture. For some reason I cannot find how to change it using format controls.
B. When I click off the running of the above described video, THEN the text appears on top of it, and I have to click again to go into the workspace.
