Can't get slide Numbers to show.

I have used Powerpoint for both Mac and PC for years and never had a problem getting going to the Master Slide and adding slide numbers. All of a sudden I can't. Occasionally it works and occasionally it doesn't.



If I go to Slide Master and click on the top slide master, have the placeholder showing, click on the placeholder surround box and go to headers and footers, wit the Slide Tab clicked, I click on Slide Number and start at 1. i click Apply to all. I see a # in the far right footer box. I select it and make it black and enlarge it to size 20. Now I close Master View or I click on View/Normal and it takes me back to normal view, but there are no slide numbers.

If i add a photo to the Master, it shows up fine on each slide. I just can't get the slide number of Footer information to show. I must have something turned off, but I can't figure out what.

If I have one of the Sublayouts with number and footer, If I select a new slide with that layout, it show up just fine.

I just can't modify the master layout to add slide numbers if I didn't start there.

This is for PC v.2010 but I guess 2011 on a Mac is similar

INSERT > Slide Numer (in normal view) Tick and enter text >> Apply to All
