Default Linking Powerpoint to Excel

Hi,

Using office 2013.

I have an excel file that contains monthly financial results including tables and charts in excel. Each month we copy a number of tables and charts from excel in to Powerpoint as images. I've seen that there is a mechanism to paste links as per this website which I'm keen to start using:
http://www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/...rpoint-slides/

In order to maintain the links and updating within Powerpoint I would need to re-use the one excel file each month. The question I have is that each month we create a new Powerpoint file, ie there's a file for each month's financial results. So when I get to Period 2, I don't want the Period 1 Powerpoint slide to update and start showing the results from Period 2 which would be in the excel file that contains the source information. What is the best way of stopping Powerpoint from updating older Period powerpoint slides? I know I can click don't update when the powerpoint file is open but I want something a bit safer than that as multiple resources can open the powerpoint file.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.
