Default pp 2007 will not see my video

Hail the reader,
Need some help with importing a vid please. I have read and tried all.
When I open the folder and click to insert, it does not appear in the file name field, in fact cant even copy and paste it into the field.
I am clearly missing something as the various solutions to the problem talk about buttons I don't seem to have. I have it in the same folder as the pp presentation. When I click insert I easily find the containing folder, however when I select it does not go to the name field so that I may say OK and it will than take it to the pp - at least this is how I believe it should work from all I have read.
So instead I double click on the file where it is in the body contents of the folder. A black square is formed on my pp slide, but it does not play the vid, I had selected to play on clicking.

The file vid ext is AVI, I can convert it to any extension needed to have this play in my presentation.
Can anyone help please, knowing that I have already followed all the advise available in various windows forums.
Is there some add on missing from my pp?
Thank you

You need to clarify whether you have 2007 or 2010 - you mention both. Also is it really 64 bit Office (not windows)

Are you sure it's an AVI can you see all other file extensions (They are turned off by default)

Can you see this box when you insert>Video and what does it say in it?

thank you for helping, here are the answers to your questions...
1. It is power point 2007
2. System I run is Windows XP 32 bit
3. Video is .avi

Here is my procedure
>insert
>click on movie arrow - opens small pull down and select - movie from file
>opens my folder where the power point and the movie files are stored
>Slect movie by double clicking on it
> Black box appears in my slide
Does not play in pptx or final slide show.

I look forward to your reply
thank you

Yes it is an AVI - I made the vid and than converted it to AVI in a progam which I have for this very purpose. I will convert to another ext if you think that this is the problem.
I do not see any "box" all I see is what I have set out in my endeavour to get it into power point. No boxes open or drop down menus other than as described in my actions
Thank you

That is weird I don't have 2007 handy but it should look pretty much like 2010 with a menu to choose the type of file (arrowed)

Can you maybe post a screenshot of the folder window you see.

Might be worth trying a wmv but there should be no problem with an avi.

Sometimes PPT shows a black or a white box instead of a movie when the path to the movie contains too much characters (e.g. when the files are deep down within a network structure).
Maybe try to
- copy both PPT file and movie file to desktop
- shorten name of movie file
- then insert desktop movie into desktop PPT file
- if necessary: move both files back to network structure
(just something you could try when other things don't work out ...)
