Default Compressing images

Hi

I have a powerpoint presentation (office 2003), which was 19mb. I did the usual to compress all images in the document and got it down to 15.6mb. I need it to be about 3mb.

Despite having compressed the images they are still rather large (around 170kb). I copied one out of ppt and put it in MS Office picture manger. Don't get me wrong, I HATE this program, but I am at work and have no other option. I compressed the image, which said it was a PNG, and got it down to 23kb. Picture saved as a jpg, which I then copied back into the ppt. Saved the ppt but no change to file size. Copied image back into picture manager, and it says it's back to 170kb.

What am I doing wrong here? I just can't get the image to stay compressed and it's driving me crazy!

I'd be very grateful for and quick responses.
