How to transfer/import a customized color theme created on another computer
Greetings-- I'm trying to add a color theme created by someone else to my computer's list of colors for use in PowerPoint 2010. Let me say a few words about what I understand about using themes and colors first. 1. Another user sent me a ppt file and template that has the theme and colors I want. I know how to browse for themes and apply the theme so it shows up in the design thumbnails on my computer. Even so, the customized color name does not show up in my list of custom colors. (When I click on Colors in the Design tab.) 2. I have created my own custom color/theme, so I see how it works and where a customized set of colors appears (above Built-in). When I save a theme I create, it does, of course, show up on my list. I believe it appears twice in my filing system, once as an xml file and another time as a thmx file. Though I can save a theme someone sends it to me, how do I get their customized palette to show on my list of colors? Do they have to send me their thmx and xml files and I put them in the right place? Or, does it really not matter whether the colors show on the list? I think they should show on the list so that I can use them in other presentations without having to apply the whole theme. I just want the palette. I suppose I can recreate it, but it seems that I should be able to import it somehow. Please advise? Thanks! |

I think you would need the xml file that can be found in
<APPDATA>\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Colors\ Then put the file in the corresponding folder on the new PC In Win 7 <APPDATA> should be C:\Users\YourName\Roaming\ |

John,
I'm glad to see that I might have been on the right track. I was puzzled about this because when I looked at the XML file created with my customized color set, it showed as only 1 KB. I thought that might have been too small and was some sort of shortcut. I opened it though, and saw a lot of code... so maybe not! I'll give this a try and report back next week. Thanks! JB |

xml files are tiny - 1kb sounds about right.

Success!
And for any MAC users who stumble on this thread (as the person who created the color palette is), the xml file is in: Macintosh HD/Applications/Microsoft Office 20XX/Office/Media/Office Themes/Theme Colors Thanks for your help! JB |

Hello again,
I have an additional question related to this subject. Does a customized color theme automatically transfer with a ppt template file (potx) when the creator of the template sends it to another user? I think not, because I didn't get it, and that was the whole reason for this thread, and the reason I had the creator send me the xml file. This surprises me, though, as I would think Microsoft/ppt would make this transparent to the end-user of a template. I raise the question because the creator made the template and color theme on his MAC. He sent the file to his PC, and insists that the customized color is on the drop down list. However, when he sends the file to anyone else, it's not there. I'm thinking the xml file doesn't travel with the template. However, I can't explain how it showed up on his PC. He swears he did not re-create the colors there, and he did not send himself the xml file. We are baffled about why I have to 'import' the xml file and he didn't, for his pc. Can you shed any light on this? I'm using ppt 2010. He's using 2010 or later. (I've just written to ask which versions are on his MAC/pc. Thanks! |

Normal behaviour (between PCs - I don't use a Mac) is for the color scheme NOT to show in the colors drop down unless you send the XML file. Obviously they do show in the Format shapes menu. We usually create an install file which installs the potx and the xml but if this was standard pro designer's PCs would soon have long menus of custom colors!

Indeed! I see your point.
So I can only conclude that a) This may be a MAC to pc behavior, or b) this is a wild one-time, inexplicable occurrence, or c) my colleague has a temporary memory lapse and he really did recreate the color scheme on his pc. Thanks again. |
