There really isn't. Major oversight IMHO. I've lost count of the time companies has asked us to write a code patch but even this is not really possible.
The way you describe is probably best you can also copy and paste special as an EMF and then ungroup twice to get a pseudo table that can be animated. It won't act like a table if you want to edit though.
