Default Bizarre: rectangle covers type box

Complete PP noob, so hopefully this is a simple settings fix.

Heres a screencap of the problem

http://s9.postimg.org/4kigykl5r/Picture_1.png

I made a new PP doc, created a Master page, added a custom background, added and positioned text boxes for headline and body copy, and choose font and color (dark blue). When I add new slide, everything seems to be right - the BG, the text box positioning. I'm ready to add the text & make my presentation.

But when i select the text box, a dark blue rectangle appears covering (almost) the ENTIRE selected box — so i can't see whats being typed. I can see the cursor there and can paste in text. When I click off the text box, the blue rect. goes away, the text pasted in is there and the slide looks fine, but whenever the text box is selected, a rectangle appears covering all content and I can't see the type to edit it. It does this on both text boxes, on all new slides.

WTF? What gives?
