Default Removing white background from an image

I am often asked to create posters, diagrams, etc. using some images that come with a "white background". Is there a way within PowerPoint to remove the white background so that the images can be used without the white background showing up on the pictorials? I appreciate any help offered.

Glad you found a solution but might be worth saying if the solution was "Set transparent color" (which has been there for several versions before 2010) then in 2010 there's a new method "Remove Background".

There's a slight learning curve but it will give better results nearly always.

Thanks for the response. The solution that I referred to is the latter method you mentioned (Remove Background). I will have to fiddle with it a bit before I am proficient but, this will work.

That's definitely the way to go.
