Default Remote control not working correctly

I can't seem to find anything like this, so I hope someone here can give me some advice.

Working with a HP desktop for a church running window 7 with office 2010.

During the presentation, if the speaker waits anywhere near 1 minute to advance to the next slide, the remote will not advance, the only way to advance is with the mouse, and that requires a double click. If the speaker advances slides rapidly, say within 20 seconds, the remote works flawlessly. I have tried two different remotes with the same result.

It began this last Sunday, the week before, there was no problem whatsoever. I cannot think of anything that has been changed in that time frame.

Thank you for your input.
