Default An error occured while opening the file dialog

In PowerPoint 2010 on Windows 7 - 64 bit, when File / Open is selected, an error message comes up stating, "An error occured while opening the file dialog. Please save your presentation, exit, and restart PowerPoint." I ran the Office repair routine but there was no change.

I can double click existing pptx files or drag them into the PowerPoint application and they will open normally. The file/open dialog box works fine in Word and Excel. Does anyone have suggestions on a fix for this PowerPoint problem?

More information. If someone else logs onto my computer and runs PowerPoint, the open dialog box works fine.

Sounds like you have a conflicting app or addin that only runs in your logon.

Do you have AddIns?

I still have no resolutions here, except that I can switch users and the Open/Save dialog box in PowerPoint works fine. I've set the Add-Inns exactly the same between the two users but had no luck.

Under System Configuration, I turned off all Startup items and all but 6 services and I still get the same problem. Five of those services always come back after deleting and the 6th is the Windows Installer which needs to be enabled so Office can verify the license.

In the Task Manager, I found several process that were only running when I was logged in as the user, so I removed them but still no luck.

In User Accounts, the Environmental Variable are all the same between users, except 5 Pro/E variables which are needed. I also added the Environment Variable __COMPAT_LAYER = EnableThemes, but it didn't help. PowerPoint works fine with the 2nd user without this variable set.

OK, Success!

It turns out that the article on Microsoft's Support site at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2027004 was heading in the right direction. However their instructions to go to the Environment Variables screen and add a new variable, didn't work for me.

What worked for me was going into the Registry Editor, navigating to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/WindowNT/CurrentVersion/AppCompatFlags/Layers. Here, C:\ProgramFiles(x86)MicrosoftOffice\Office14\POWER PNT.EXE was set to DISABLETHEMES DISABLEDWM HIGHDPIAWARE. Deleting the data setting fixed my problem with the file dialog box. Hopefully deleting this setting doesn't affect other applications.

Good to know. Thanks for getting back.

That reg key reflects the setting here.

Navigate to PowerPNT.exe (path as in the key)

Right Click > Properties
Compatability Tab

Normally everything is unticked you had three things ticked! Worth checking killing the key has unchecked them.

Yes, killing the registry key unchecked the flags in the PowerPoint/Properties/Compatibility window. Checking the 'Disable visual themes' causes the problem for me, although it doesn't seem to reset the registry key. Unchecking this flag in the Compatibility window is the simplest fix. Thanks for the tip.

Hi,
I think it was a big problem.I will help you when you try to access the File Open dialog box in the 2007 Microsoft Office system or in Microsoft Office 2010, the operation may not work. This issue occurs on a Windows 7-based computer. When you encounter this issue in Office Word or in Office Excel, you do not receive an error message. However, in Office PowerPoint, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred while opening the file dialog. Please save your presentations, exit, and then restart PowerPoint.
And the other way to resolve such problem is below:
  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, click Properties, and then click advanced system settings.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
  3. Locate and select the __COMPAT_LAYER variable, and then click Edit.
  4. Set the value of the __COMPAT_LAYER variable to Enable Themes. Or, delete the __COMPAT_LAYER variable.
Thanks, I think it will help you......
