Exclamation Fixing the "Play across slides" issue.

I am having the same problem a lot of people are having with Powerpoint - the crash that occurs when a sound inside Powerpoint is set to "play across slides".
After searching with Google, I have found numerous people having the same problem, and the causes ranging from conflict with video codecs, to conflict with applications and even conflict with printer drivers (wtf?). Complaining about this annoyance aside, I really need a solution to this problem for the following situation:
- I need a song to play "in the background" of all my slides.
- I will not uninstall any of my programs, I have no redundant software, my entire system is customized to my needs and there is no "uncommon" software on it.

- I need to be able to send this presentation to multiple people, the systems of whom I neither know, neither have control over.

The problem arises that I need the sound to be imbedded in the presentation and start with it, I cannot just second-rate play the sound separately and start the presentation, moreover that it needs to be accessible to, for the sake of simplicity, everyone.

So far I have tried several different ways around this problem that all fail, currently the presentation crashes right after the initial transition to the first slide, this will be referred to as "crash".
I have tried saving in *.ppt version, crash.
I have tried setting the sound to play on a click and end after # slides, crashes when sound is played
I have tried adding a video with the sound as audio and setting it to play automatically, crash

This happens on any Powerpoint file, now just on this particular presentation, I have tested it.

I REALLY need help fixing this issue!

I hear what you are saying "I will not uninstall any of my programs, I have no redundant software" but my experience is third party conflicts are nearly always the problem. Despite the Google search it is not really very common.

2010 plays video and sound using "Direct show" (no previous version did) the problem is that Microsoft allows third party programs to modify Direct Show and eg install plug ins and filters. If that sounds like a recipe for disaster... It is (IMHO!)

Have you tried preventing all non Microsoft software running at start up and disabling all AddIns (temporarily). This might at least point to the problem.

I am sure the problem is with a third party conflict, however as I stated, I can't just fix it by uninstalling a program, mainly because the presentation needs to be accessible to the general public.

As I said I understand but if it's a conflict it would be the only way I know to solve it. At least if you temporarily disable third party stuff you would know the problem and could warn people. The clashes don't seem straightforward. Many people say VLC causes this but it works fine for me for example.

My experience is that this is fairly rare and won't affect too many people. You will need to worry about people without 2010 though. 2007 will only play embedded video and mp3 if they have SP2 or 3 and may always fail to play sound which has been faded or trimmed in 2010.

Oh, wow, that bit about people without 2010 really came as a shock! I never even thought about that, and I have even made a *.ppt just in case. -.-
