Default Slide navigation by arrows, number, and mouse

I have a problem with navigation of slides.

I have a power point show with a number of slides
I can select a slide by typing the slide number and move between slides using the arrows. Trouble starts when I use the mouse, if I click on slides using the mouse it selects and displays the slide as expected. But this disables the keyboard navigation. the only thing that seems to fix the problem is exiting the show and restarting it afresh, and that is an inconvenience.

what setting needs to be changed?

Can anyone help
