Go to the SmartArt tab, and click on either the Relationship or Hierarchy buttons. You'll then see a bunch of pre-made diagrams that you can start with. Once you pick one, right click on the various circles and squares to add additional ones. And left click to drag then around to positions that make sense.

You can easily add text and colors by right clicking and choosing the appropriate items.
