If I have some numbered items using the auto bullets and numbering function, how can I make it so that if I want to add a numbered item on one slide, the next slide's numbers will update too. For example:

On Slide 1
1. Something
2. more of something
3. and then some

On Slide 2
4. Stuff on slide 2
5. more stuff

If I were to add an item to Slide 1, I get this result:

On Slide 1
1. Something
2. more of something
3. and then some
4. I added something

On Slide 2
4. Stuff on slide 2
5. more stuff

I want slide 2 to update to this, automatically:

On Slide 2

5. Stuff on slide 2
6. more stuff

Thoughts?

Don't think there's a built in automatic way to do this.

You can set the start number though using
Numbering drop menu on Ribbon >> Bullet & Numbering

I ended up doing that but I have 50 slides. Next time I want to add a numbered item to slide 1, I have to change the start number on 49 slides, lame.

The problem would be PowerPoint knowing exactly how you number - There are a lot of possible variables. If the numbering is straightforward you MIGHT be able to use code like this:

Code:
Sub renum()
Dim num As Long
Dim osld As Slide
Dim oshp As Shape
num = num + 1
For Each osld In ActivePresentation.Slides
For Each oshp In osld.Shapes
If oshp.HasTextFrame Then
If oshp.TextFrame.HasText Then
If oshp.TextFrame.TextRange.ParagraphFormat.Bullet.Type = ppBulletNumbered Then
With oshp.TextFrame.TextRange
.ParagraphFormat.Bullet.StartValue = num
num = num + .Paragraphs.Count - 1
End With
End If
End If
End If
Next oshp
Next osld
End Sub
How to use code
