Default Height and Width blank - Excel Chart in Powerpoint

Alright, I've been at this for a while now. I'm using Microsoft Office 2003 (which is not an option I can or want to change) and XP SP3.

I have a powerpoint presentation which I'll refer to as PostQ.ppt. Most of the slides have charts in them which were pasted from excel as pictures (windows metafiles). When I select Format: Picture for most of those pictures, the Height and Width fields under the Size tab do not show any numbers. They're just blank. I can still resize the pictures using those fields, but no matter what I do the Height and Width are blank the next time I bring up the Format: Picture dialog box. Also, there are a few chart pictures in PostQ.ppt that DO show height and width measurements, but not in any discernible pattern. Changing the "Lock Aspect Ratio" or "Relative to Original Picture Size" checkboxes doesn't have any effect either way.

When I go to the original source chart in excel and copy and paste it into PostQ.ppt as a picture (windows metafile), that picture also shows blank height and width fields.

However, if I open a blank powerpoint presentation first and paste the excel chart into there as a windows metafile, I do get height and width measurements. Furthermore, if I paste to a blank ppt first, then paste to PostQ.ppt, the new picture in PostQ.ppt will have height and width measurements.

The reverse is also true. If I paste into PostQ.ppt first, then to a blank ppt, the pictures in both the PostQ and the blank ppt do NOT have Height or Width measurements.

Changing the picture to a drawing object does fix the height/width problem, but then it loses some of its formatting and moves through the powerpoint slowly. And it's beside the point anyway, because it doesn't explain why some of the pictures do give me height/width measurements, or why pasting a chart into a blank ppt first gives me height and width measurements. I'm trying to find out what's causing the problem, not a workaround.

I think that is all the detail I have right now.

EDIT: I've uploaded simplified versions of the documents in question. I had to remove data specific to my job, but these documents show the same symptoms.

First - I can't repro this. I see the height and width when I open your sample in 2003.

BUT

There is a bug in 2003. If the default shape is set to resize to fit text then the numbers will be blank for new shapes/

You do seem to have this set as default. I don't see how it could affect charts but worth a look.

Insert a shape. add a lttle text and Right click > Format Shape In TextBox untick Resize to fit Text

OK out and right click again set as Default Shape
