Default image cannot currently be displayed

Just taken the plunge to update to Office 2010 (fromXP!).
I open an older .ppt file in compatibility mode and add some slides, placing some new tif images on them. I save the file. When I open it again, the images have gone, replaced by a small red cross and 'this image cannot be currently displayed'. If I convert the file to pptx, the images are remembered. If in the .ppt file I insert jpg images instead of the tif ones then everything is saved correctly.
Does anyone know why I canot use tif images in Powerpoint 2010 in compatibility mode?

Regards
geddit
