Default Hyperlinks to Web Sites in PowerPoint 2007 Not Working

Software: PowerPoint 2007
Operating System: Windows 7 32bit
Browser: IE8
PC model number: HP Elite Book 8540W Laptop

I have embedded some hyperlinks to websites in a PowerPoint presentation. However, the links aren't working like they should be. When I go into slide show mode, I click on the hyperlink. I get the little blue whirling circle indicating the system is working, but the webpage never opens.

However, when I escape from slide show view and minimize the PowerPoint presentation, there is a highlighted tab in Internet Explorer for the web site I was trying to open. That's not the way embedded hyperlinks are supposed to work. Why is this happening? And how can I fix it?
