Default Expanded folders in Navigation Pain

I have several e-mail addresses and have placed many options of each into the Favorites navigation pane This makes the lower pane so small that it is a pain.

What is worse is that when I collapse the sub-folders in the lower pane , they do not stay collapsed. Every time I go back into Outlook, one or two, not all, are fully expanded and either I have to go in to collapse them again or put up with it and have to scroll down to other e-mail folders. Strangely enough, it is the e-mail folder with the most sub-folders that is always expanded.

What a pain the navigation pane has become...
Is there a fix for this?
