Default E-mail address AutoFill

I hope that that is what it is called (-:

When I enter an e-mail address a list of address that start with that letter shows up. Many times it is populated with names that I will never use again and I have been having a difficult time keeping it simple.

Is there any way I can prevent the automatic saving of all e-mail addresses? I would not mind a prompt asking me if I want to save it but this auto save everything is getting annoying,,,

That would be the Email Autocomplete Cache. To disable it:

Click on File and go to Options.
Click on Mail on the left.
Scroll down to the Send Messages section.
Uncheck the box for "Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines"
Click OK.

You can also clear the cache by clicking the "Empty Auto-Complete List" button

That should be it. Hope this helps.

Sounds like once I do this then there is no autocomplete at all. I would like to be selective as to what goes into it and still have it in use.

As for the option to empty it, I firsrt create an e-mail message and use the BCC option and the autocomplete to accumulate all the names I want to keep. (Hit A then select what I want, then B, C, D,,,) now I move all the names into the body of the e-mail message and send it to myself.

Delete all and repopulate it by opening the s-mail message and moving the named back into the BCC line. When they underscore, then the Autocomplete has the named I want.

Tedious I know but it works...
It would be nice if I had the option to select what goes in in the first place.

Unfortunately it is pretty much all or nothing. You have a pretty good method of keeping those addresses that you want while getting rid of the rest. Unfortunately there's no way to configure Outlook to ask for confirmation before adding an address to the Auto-complete list.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Auto-complete list was never meant to be a permanent repository of addresses. Basically it's there for convenience sake, but addresses that are emailed frequently or that you want to keep long term really should be kept as a Contact. The auto-complete list is highly susceptible to becoming corrupt or storing invalid addresses, and I recommend clearing the list on a regular basis.
