Default Programmatically changing folder item selection

I cannot determine how, in Visual Basic, to change the currently selected mail item in a folder to a different item. I understand how to display, copy, move, etc. items, but I can't seem to simply 'highlight' (select) a different item in the same folder. I thought it would be a function of 'Activate' or 'Selection,' but apparently not. Can anyone help?
