Default Unable to edit a received message w/Outlook 2010

I've been using MS Office products for many years, and recently upgraded to the Office 2010 Pro Plus version. I used to edit RECEIVED email messages with notes to myself - ie "completed", "done", etc. With this new program, I cannot figure out how to do this. No answers found on the MS "Help and How-To" site. Can anyone help me? I relied on that for filing and follow-up notes for a lot of years and really miss it. Thanks, Mona

You should be able to edit received messages in Outlook 2010 pretty much the same way that it's done in 2007:

1. Double-click the message to open it.
2. In the Move section of the Message ribbon, click on the Actions menu.
3. Click Edit Message.

That's pretty much it.

Default The "edit" and "actions" buttons are grayed out..

Thank you for replying so quickly. I don't know what is the problem, but the needed buttons aren't available. I've tried removing them and adding them back to the ribbon without success. Any other thoughts? Everything else seems to work just fine. Thanks.. mona

I've looked around a bit in Outlook, and it looks like the command is only available when you open an email message in a new window. It's not accessible through with the reading pane in Outlook's main window.

Try this to see if you can add the command to a custom group in the ribbon:

1. Double-click on any message to open it in a new window.
2. Right-click on the blank area of the ribbon to the right of the other icons.
3. Click Customize the Ribbon.
4. Under the "Choose command from" drop-down, select All Commands.
5. Find "Edit Message" in the left-hand box, and click it to highlight it.
6. Click the "New Group" button below the left hand box. This should create a "New Group (Custom)" group under the Message group. You can rename it if you want.
7. With "Edit Message" and the New Group highlighted, click the Add button.
8. Click OK.

The Edit Message command should now appear on the ribbon.

If the Edit Message command isn't available under All Commands, then I think there'd have to be something wrong with your installation. I'm running Office 2010 Pro Plus as well, and I didn't need to do anything special to access the command.

Hope this helps.

Perfect! I had added "edit text" to the ribbon and never noticed "edit message"... duh.. Works great now.. It really does help me to be able to make a note directly on a message, save and file it.. Thank you so much for your patience and help.. mona

Default Can also add to Quick Links

I don't know why they put it in Move, but there it is. I use this feature often. I did find that I could add this to the quick access tools but it only shows up when you have a message Open.
