Default Outlook.pst shenanigans

Hi folks

I'm working with Outlook 2007 (POP, WIN7 32-bit) and have stumbled on this issue of not having any Auto Archive option. In addition, my outlook.pst file is now 3.6GB and seriously undermining Outlook's performance.

I have Archive Folders (previously unused) in addition to my Personal Folders, and so I have manually dragged and dropped about 1GB's worth of subfolders from my Personal Folders to my Archive Folders. These subfolders are no longer visible under my Personal Folders; are visible under my Archive Folders; and the archive.pst file has grown by about 1GB. BUT, the Outlook.pst file hasn't change a byte!?

Can anybody explain what I am missing here? I see that under Data File Management -> Data Files that Outlook.pst is the default, but whether this has any role to play is beyond my level of expertise.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated :-)
