Default Outlook 2010 Sync issues

I recently upgraded my PC and purchased Office 2010. I'm struggling with Outlook and can't seem to find any guidance. Is there a way to turn off the "sync" feature? Number one, it takes forever to open individual emails because it seems to be syncing on each email. Also, once I download email to Outlook, I no longer want to save a copy on my email server, but I can't figure out how to turn that off in Outlook 2010. Finally, the program seems to do some sort of "auto archive" however, I can't figure out where the archived emails have gone....

Any help on where I can search to get some of these questions answered???

Thanks!
