Outlook exits by itself, Help Please!?
I recently moved from Outlook Express to Outlook. It is generally a good
thing as Outlook offers a lot more. But.... Outlook keeps exiting by itself, does send/ receive and prompts me to OK empty deleted items. Guess I set-it up wrong but can't see how to fix it. Please help! I do want outlook to auto empty deleted items but I don't want it shutting down all the time! Jerry |

Re: Outlook exits by itself, Help Please!?
I am having this same problem, and it's REALLY annoying!
I'm using Outlook 2003 on a Dell Dimension 1100 Windows XP desktop computer that is only 2 months old. This computer was purchased to upgrade (a bit) the 3-to-5-year old Dell Dimension 2350 Windows XP desktop computer I had been using. Office/Outlook 2003 was also on that older computer, but Outlook on that computer never used to exit unexpectedly. (By the way, I've never used Outlook Express here at work, so my problem isn't migration-related.) My new Dell computer is running a free 90-day trial of McAfee Security Center (only because it was bundled; when the trial ends, we'll probably uninstall it and use something else). The only other thing I can think of to tell whoever is willing to troubleshoot this issue (thank you!) is that I tried troubleshooting this myself by doing something that I think I saw advised in another forum, and that was to uninstall everything listed in the ADD-IN Manager and the COM Manager. (I don't know how to re-install any that I SHOULD have.) Thanks! |

Since posting my last msg, I've noticed that Outlook exits when I click on the 'Show Desktop' icon that's on the far left (Quick Launch area) of my System Tray.
I used Notepad to open the Show Desktop.scf file, and here's the (command lines?) that .scf file contains: [Shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop (exactly what's on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=190355 ) There definitely seems to be a connection between Outlook exiting unecessarily and whatever the system does to Show Desktop. Hope this info helps us solve this!!!! |

Re: Outlook exits by itself---I think I found the solution!
When I launch Outlook, its icon appears in the far-right end of the System Tray. (I'm not sure why this icon appears automatically, as there doesn't seem to be any box to check or uncheck anywhere in Outlook's Tools/Options tabs to let the User set this.)
Anyway, when I right-clicked on that Outlook icon in my system tray, I saw that 'Hide When Minimized' was checked. (I think I did that several weeks ago, to decrease the number of distracting icons near the system clock that I refer to all day long.) I unchecked that option, and VOILA!, now when I click my Show Desktop icon, Outlook doesn't exit by itself! (The Outlook window along my Task Bar still shows.) I think what this means is that Outlook wasn't really exiting (as in closing itself down), it was just Hiding because 'Hide When Minimized' had been checked. So that option doesn't apply to the Outlook ICON in the System Tray, it applies to the windows that shows Outlook is a program you're rurnning! Hope this solution works for "jerry" the Guest who originated this thread! :-D |
