Yes. Just export all of your information to a .pst file. Then once you have 2010 downloaded, you can import the pst file into 2010. You will have your email, calendar and contacts all within the .pst file.

Thanks Shawn, That's encouraging.
I am concerned however for when I try to export my outlook 2000 file I get an error message telling me I must first install the export option.
I am however able to create a backup pst file. Would that serve the same purpose going into outlook2010? If so I will proceedto purchase the packackage and giveit a try.

I am planning on doing the exact same thing, why do I need to export, can I just point outlook 2010 to where my original .pst file is located and it will use it. Or does import changes the .pst to its own version?
Also if I am not able to export can I use a backup?

Exporting your data essentially creates a back up of all current information found in your mailbox. it is also recommended check the size of your mailbox data.

If combine your data is close to 2gigs of information export only your emails to a .PST file and export calendar and contacts to a .CSV file. This will eliminate the possibility of corruption.

If you currently have a .PST you can simply import that file and all data will be uploaded to Outlook 2010.

Note; If your current .PST is a back up of a previous date it will only contain data up to that date stored.

hope this helps.

I have saved my outlook 2003 pst folder on af USB harddisk before upgrading to outlook 2010. After having upgraded (win7 & office2010) - and opened Outlook 2010 - I whant to manually open my old outlook 2003 datafile within outlook 2010 (file - open) - but I got the following error message: "There was denied access to the file. You do not have the necessary permissions to access the file." (Translated from danish to english via Google). Do somebody know why I canīt open my old 2003 pst folder?

Did you attempt to import this data file using the standard File > Open > Import?

Or, if you have it the easy way, and use a Online mail client (say hotmail/gmail etc.) You can also just inport from there. That way you don't have to Export stuff

Ofcourse, make sure to check or all of your contacts are on that client, as for your mail.

If you follow the above steps to back up your data, then store it in a location that is easily assessable, you should have no issues upgrading to the new outlook client.
