Default The old chestnut - 'Enter Network Password'

I know this has been a massive problem for many users, and I haven't so far come across a solution (out of the many suggested) that has worked for me. I'm using Outlook 2007 with Windows 7, both recently installed, although I did use to have this problem with Outlook Express as well. I have a number of e-mail accounts, all of which I administer through Outlook. Several, though not all, of these are Hotmail accounts, one is an '@msn.com' account, and the others are related to my own website. Periodically, with no discernible pattern, the 'Enter Network Password' dialogue box will appear for any given account. You can save the password : it makes no difference. You can not save the password : it makes no difference. You can press 'escape' : it makes no difference. I've tried deleting every single account and setting them up again from scratch; I've tried re-formatting the entire drive and re-installing Windows 7 again from scratch; I've tried, as I say, several suggestions culled from other forums, none of which have so far solved the problem. I can list those suggestions here if called upon to do so, but it would take up quite a lot of space and I didn't want to do that if it isn't necessary.

If anyone has any ideas about this I would welcome them - ideally ideas which don't involve messing with the registry, as I'm really not comfortable with that, but any ideas would be welcome as it's driving me mad. The dialogue box in question has popped up twice whilst I've been typing this post, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything - it can appear in the middle of any other programme at any time. It hasn't actually stopped me from getting e-mails - but with something like ten e-mail accounts, it's getting really annoying!!

Disappointed to see you have had no response as I have had exactly the same problem. I set the accounts up a couple of weeks ago but the problem has only come up today. I have accounts on not just my (work) computer but the family one as well and the problem has cropped up on both computers today!

I'd hoped I might have some luck as well, although I'm not that surprised that I haven't. This seems to be a very widespread problem, and not a new one at that - I used to get this with Outlook Express as well. I would have thought by now that someone would have come up with a definitive answer - Microsoft themselves, maybe...?! - but no-one has, or at least no-one that I've yet come across. I must say I'm hoping to find some solution, as I've a number of e-mail accounts, and these messages keep popping up with annoying regularity!

Still no progress with this, and here's what I've tried so far :

From : http://www.msoutlook.info/question/40
Browse to C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect
Make a backup of this folder while all other programs are closed and then delete that folder. See if your passwords are remembered now. You might need to enter them a single time when you start Outlook for the first time after this.
Attempted this Sunday August 29 2010 : 15:39.
Didn't work : the first instance of the password being forgotten took place just 42 minutes later at 16:21, shortly after the computer had blue-screened ( whether this was a coincidence or not ).

Didn't work : I don't know exactly when the 'insert password' message came up, as I wasn't on the computer at the time, but when I logged on at 21:08 the same evening, it was there.

For what it's worth, I spent hours trying to figure out why that box kept popping up (and no emails were working), but finally cured it by switching off my wireless router and switching it back on again. Problem solved - simples. Well, it worked for me....
Attempted this Sunday August 29 2010 : 21:30.
Didn't work : I don't know exactly when the 'insert password' message came up, as I wasn't on the computer at the time, but when I logged on at 23:18 the same evening, it was there.

From : http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=618dcd05-8494-4827-bba6-8072406b3fb7
Re-configured account settings so that the 'outgoing server' port no. was 587 rather than 25, for all five problem accounts.
Attempted this Saturday September 18 2010 : 08:42
Didn't work : It took about ten minutes before the problem re-occurred.

I've also tried : manually disabling COM add-ins; disabling McAfee altogether ( temporarily!! ); constructing a whole new Outlook profile; and deleting the relevant subkey in the registry, in order to see whether any of these much-suggested solutions worked; none of them made any difference whatsoever. I've checked, double-checked and triple-checked the POP3 settings for all five accounts.

Surely there's got to be SOME solution that actually works?

Uhm.. Well.. Outlook and Microsoft alltogether can be rather annoying at this point..

Do you also have that pop-up when you boot Internet browsers? If so, it might be your internet provider who is causing the problem

If that doesn't work, You can always try reintalling Office... Though you need to back-up your mail 1st

Default Still no solution, though maybe some progress ... ?

I've tried re-installing Office - twice. It's an enormous pain in the tush and doesn't solve the problem. However, there is one new development.

I noticed in a post elsewhere that this seems to be either caused or exacerbated when you have multiple accounts and set the 'send / receive' settings for short intervals. It was suggested that it had something to do with the fact that if the server was running slowly or whatever, one 'send & receive' might overlap with the next and cause an error message to pop up; and because the system couldn't identify the error, it would pick the nearest available error message, which is the 'enter network password' popup. I have nowhere near enough technical knowledge to know whether or not this would be true, although on the face of it, it does appear to make sense, and indeed to explain a few things. For example, the randomness of the occurrences : the server will run faster at some times than others, there will not necessarily be any pattern to this, and therefore there will not necessarily be any pattern to the incidence of the popups. The fact that ticking the 'remember password' box doesn't solve the problem - since remembering the password was not the problem in the first place, inasmuch as the dumb server just threw up the nearest available error message it could find, clearly remembering the password will not make any difference. The fact that no amount of changing settings ( apart from the regularity of sending and receiving ) will fix the problem.

Having said all of that : my settings were originally set to send and receive once a minute. When I read the post I'm referring to, I changed the settings to once every two minutes, then once every three minutes, then once every four minutes ( which is where it currently stands ). It's very difficult to monitor precisely how frequently the problem occurs, since it can often be the case that if I leave Outlook running whilst away from the computer ( which I usually do ), there will be an 'enter network password' popup waiting when I return, and of course I've no way of knowing how long it's been there. However, it seems to me to be the case that the frequency of the occurrences may have reduced to some degree as I've reduced the frequency of the send / receive.

And having said all of that : whether or not I'm right about the frequency of the occurrences having diminished, they certainly haven't stopped altogether. Therefore, I don't know whether I'm barking up the wrong tree or not, nor do I know what would be the optimum frequency of send & receives - every four minutes clearly isn't few enough. I'll continue to reduce the frequency and see if it seems to make any difference, although in the meantime I'd appreciate any thoughts that anyone may have on this.

By the by, I have to say that even if this does ultimately provide a solution, it still seems bizarre to me that I and another multitude of users have had to come by this as a result of hideously lengthy trial and error. Shouldn't it be the case that either Microsoft have identified and solved the problem by now, or alternatively that the solution should be clearly, readily and publicly available?

Firefox, I have exactly the same problem as you and tried everything you have tried and then some. I even recently upgraded from 2003 to 2007 - all to no avail. I just wondered if you ever managed to resolve this issue ' cause I, like you were, am at my wits end trying to resolve this.

In short, no. I carried on looking for possible solutions after the last time I posted on here and as I say, cutting a much longer story short, nothing I tried was successful. Ultimately I've had no other choice than to learn to live with the problem whether I like it or not. I still find it incredible, given that we're not alone by a very long chalk in having these problems, that Microsoft haven't come up with a definitive answer or bug-fix ( if in fact it's a bug ), but there you are: that's Microsoft for you, I guess. They're big enough by now that they don't have to worry what you or I think.

Forgive me if some information is missing, I did my best to read this thread thoroughly.

Have you added the server name address to the trusted sites section of Internet Options? Adding pop3.live.com to the trusted sites should resolve the prompting.

( Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sited )

After this is done go into Custom Levels and scroll to the bottom. Change the Logon option to Automatically log on using credentials.

Let me know.

When I attempt to do this, a message-box comes up that says, 'Sites added to this zone must use the https:// prefix. This prefix assures a secure connection.' I can over-ride this by un-checking the 'require server verification for all sites in this zone' box, but then I'm not sure if that defeats the object; or, I can un-check the box, add 'pop3.live.com' and then re-check the box, but I'm not sure whether that would work either.

Also, when I click on the 'custom level' tab, 'automatically log on using credentials' is not an option, or at least not worded that way. There are four possible options under 'User authentication > Logon'; 'Anonymous logon', 'Automatic logon only in intranet zone' ( at present, this one is selected - by default, I presume, since I've never selected it manually ), 'Automatic logon with current username and password', or finally, 'Prompt for user name and password'. I should point out that there are eleven separate e-mail accounts set up within Outlook, and it is currently set to check all eleven of these for incoming mail ( and send any outgoing mail ) every time it does a scheduled send / receive, which is once a minute.

As mentioned previously - and speaking, I'm sure, on behalf of the innumerable other people who have experienced the same problem - any help in this area would be appreciated, so if you can shed any further light on the situation given this information, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks for your assistance.

Thank you for your additional information. The option you want is " 'Automatic logon with current username and password'. Also confirm IE is your default browser as well as Setting outlook as your defaulted E-mail program.

In the mean time, im searching for the correct Microsoft 7 solution to save passwords correctly.

Best regards,

Hello,

I've changed the selection to the 'Automatic logon with current username and password' option, clicked 'apply' and 'close', and come out of the Internet Options window. Since you didn't comment on the message-box that comes up saying 'Sites added to this zone must use the https:// prefix. This prefix assures a secure connection.', I've done as I said in my previous post, i.e. un-check the box, add 'pop3.live.com' and then re-check the box. If I should have done anything different, you need to let me know.

We'll see what happens next. I did the 'pop3' thing immediately after your last post, and the 'Enter Network Password' popup has still been occurring intermittently since then, so if anything, it's now going to be the 'Automatic logon' change that will make a difference. Since it is an intermittent thing, I won't know whether it's still happening until and unless it happens; so, watch this space ...!

Thank you for your assistance and you may rest assured I'll keep you posted.

Sorry: forgot to add - yes, Internet Explorer is my default browser and Outlook is my default e-mail programme.

F.Y.I.: This hasn't solved the problem. On the face of it, it does seem that the 'Enter Network Password' popup might be occurring slightly less frequently now, but then given the very intermittent nature of it in the first place, on the strength of barely 24 hours' worth of observation, it's difficult to say. I would have thought that any given solution, if it is a solution, would either make the problem go away altogether or it wouldn't; therefore, if it's occurred at all in the last 24 hours - as it has - then by definition the problem hasn't gone away.

Worth a try, but as I believe they say in the States: "Close, but no doughnut".

Default Confirmed, IE trusted site does not fix

I've been struggling with this problem for years and am no closer to a solution. I can confirm that adding pop3.live.com to the trusted sites, use current user credentials does not cure the problem.

Default Enter Network Passsword: A possible clue?

For what it's worth: My daughter runs Outlook 2007 under Win 7. I don't remember how we resolved it, but we eliminated or reduced the occurrence of Enter Network Password while the PC was in a "home" environment. Right now, however, she has the PC with her on a trip, and because she's using hotel wi-fi arrangements, she changed to a "public" environment, and the darned thing came back, in spades. Does this give anybody a clue?

One more stupid question. What does the message mean? Is it asking for the email password for the account, or does it want something else entirely?
