Pen icon produces grayed out pens not active

Have Outlook through Office 365 and when I author a new email and try to use the "pen" the drop down menu shows various size/width pens but they are grayed out - not active. Then pens/stylus is Microsoft and the computer/software are also Microsoft. Pen battery is good etc. Any ideas as to what to do?
