Exclamation Outlook - Cannot manually configure servers, ports, etc, for @Verizon.net account

I'm running Outlook Version 2002 (Build 12527.20278 Click to run).

I have a Verizon e-Mail account that I have had for more than 15 years and recently it stopped working. I deleted the existing account in Outlook based upon the assumption that I could create or re-create account.

When I attempted to create a New account, I was unable to manually enter the server names, ports, etc. Using the Advanced options (Let me set up my account manually), clicking on the Connect button, selecting either POP or IMAP, entering the password and clicking on the Connect button. Displayed a window asking me to re-enter the password id.
The incoming server "pop.mail.yahoo.com" is incorrect.

The correct incoming server is "pop.verizon.net." I cannot edit the server name. The something went wrong window pops up before I can make a selection then MS Outlook closes and restarts. The new e-Mail account was not created. If the new e-Mail does not exist, I cannot access the "Server Settings" for an e-Mail account that does not exist in Outlook.

I have a @verizon.net “burner“ account that I use to minimize spam and when the spam become a pain, I delete the “burner” @verizon.net account. I still receive e-Mail through the “burner” account that uses the Incoming: pop.verizon.net 995 (SSL/TLS) and Outgoing: smtp.verizon.net 465 (SSL/TLS).

How can I setup the @verizon.net e-Mail account in Outlook that requires the manual setup of the servers, ports, etc.

PS: Another problem I noticed when trying to solve this problem is that the default e-Mail account cannot be changed.

Thanks for your help.

I have a similar problem, except that my longtime account, at a verizon.net address, goes to Yahoo's POP server. (Verizon merged or something with Yahoo years ago, but then left or passed the email handling over to them.)

I can log in to my email, which stay current, on the web, but Outlook steadfastly refuses to connect. I have changed the password (on the web and in Outlook); removed the account from Outlook and tried numerous times to recreate it (can't connect to server); even spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Verizon, whose reps technically don't deal with email issues any longer but a rep helped me anyway, finally telling me it was a problem with the Yahoo servers and to try again in a few days. That was a week ago. I have run Quick Repair for MS Office 365; still no luck.
I can't find any notice of Yahoo POP servers being down, except a mention of a problem for business accounts, and, since I can connect via the web without issue, I wonder if that's the problem at all. Could it be that Outlook is keeping some data somewhere in the background that is causing a conflict?

Default Outlook No Longer Allows Manual Configuration of Servers

If your OS is Windows 10 and you’ve installed updates to Windows 10 you probably longer have a Control Panel menu item when you left click on the Start button. If your currently installed version of Windows 10 does not have a Control Panel menu item, you cannot manually create/edit/delete e-Mail accounts through the Operating System. If you do have access to the Control Panel menu item, access the control panel and select the e-Mail icon. Selecting that icon displays the screen shown below.

Clicking on the Email Accounts button displays a screen shown below. From the screen shown below you can manually edit the settings of your Verizon e-Mail account or any e-Mail account. However, my guess is you no longer have the Control Panel menu item.

What does that mean?

You must configure all e-Mail accounts through the Outlook application. The current version of Outlook treats all computer users as absolute dummies. As you figured out by now it will not allow you to manually configure an e-Mail account.
Our versions of Outlook query the web for the Incoming Server and Outgoing Server names. For the Incoming Server Microsoft’s Outlook database returns “pop.mail.yahoo.com” while the correct Server Name should be “pop.verizon.net.” That procedure is hardcoded into Outlook. In the return entry is in Microsoft’s mail server database.

I searched the Windows registry (regedit) and discovered that the Outlook maintains the configuration for e-Mail accounts in the 2 keys listed below:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Offi ce\16.0\Outlook\Profiles\Outlook\

Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3566635525-3124196755-3120176322-1001\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Profil es\Outlook

I have several “burner” e-Mail accounts that I use when in order to access information I am required to provide an e-Mail address. Whenever spam to the “burner” e-Mail address becomes too much I just delete the “burner” e-Mail address and create a new one. That worked well with Verizon and AOL but Yahoo wants money. In the technical support is virtually nonexistent.

I am considering deleting the values for the “burner” e-Mail account and entering the values for my verizon.net account. I hang up is the encrypted password entry

The only way to bring pressure on Verizon to correct this problem is to close the Verizon FiOS account and move new to a new ISP.

Many of my neighbors have Comcast and hate it.

Verizon discovered that most of the cost of their Internet service, FiOS or DSL, was related to labor costs for maintaining the @Verizon.net e-Mail accounts. Hence, they purchased AOL and Yahoo to push their e-Mail services off on a subsidiary. I understand that both of those subsidiaries are now for sale but since there virtually worthless after paying billions of dollars for them the executive suite of Verizon has a Wall Street analyst problem.

I discovered Microsoft’s hidden path to “Control Panel.” Left click on the “Start button” and select “Run” from the menu. In the “Open” window enter “Control Panel” and depress the Enter key. The next window that opens “CONTROL Panel Items” select “Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2016) (32-bit). When the “Mail Set up – Outlook” window appears click on the “Email Accounts…” button and the Account Settings window will appear. If you highlight any e-Mail account and select “Change…” from the menu bar, the “Change Account” window - POP and IMAP Account Settings Enter the mail server settings for your account. I was able enter the correct addresses for the Verizon incoming and outgoing servers and tested the account settings successfully from “Change Account” window.

I was able to send emails from the Verizon address; however, the version of Outlook that I am using had a hissy fit and returned the e-Mail to the sending address. “Message Delivery Failure” was the subject and the body of the message appears below:

“ This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed permanently:

username@verizon.net

I have decided that I am going to recognize that using the @Verizon.net e-Mail is not now viable for some @Verizon.net usernames and sooner or later the @Verizon.net e-Mail address will not be viable for any username.

Now, if Verizon can only unload AOL and Yahoo for a couple of hundred million dollars after paying in excess of 8 billion for the two businesses, I suspect senior management @Verizon would be ecstatic.
