Question Synchronize Outlook 2007 on Laptop and Desktop

Hi there

I have 2 Windows 7 systems, both use my GMAIL accounts, no MS Exchange here!

Can I synchronize both systems so it does not matter which I use? Right now IMAP does not seem to work - but POP3 does - but only the FIRST machine to log on and download gets the emails!!

If I cant do this from GMAIL directly then can I synchronize the 2 copies of Outlook somehow? The .PST files are pretty large so dont want to start copying these around if I can avoid it.

Thanks

jp

If you get your Gmail Outlook connections set up properly, you will be able to have your messages synched between Gmail and the 2 Outlooks with no problem. I do exactly that with two copies of Outlook and two Gmail accounts.

If you go to this Gmail Outlook connection page, you will find detailed instructions on getting the IMAP connection between Outlook & Gmail working. That should take care of the rest.

I hope this helps.

Hey wpmann

Thanks for this - maybe it's because I have been using POP3 not IMAP that I had the problems - GMail was "POP3-ing" to whichever machine asked for it and only POP3-ed emails once - so one Machine would get some and the other would get the rest - no overlap!

Thanks again for the reply

- regards jp

JP,

You have it right. POP3 is usually set up so that Outlook removes the message from the server after downloading a copy of it. This would give you the results you've seen.

Hey Bill

Just to close this, it transpired that I did not have the selections properly made in GMail either; your comment of "ensure GMail connections are set up properly" and instructions to switch to IMAP alerted me to that. All now works just fine.

So again, thanks for your excellent help! I did post a follow up after getting it all fixed, maybe you would know the answer; is there any way to combine 2 IMAP Inboxes into one Inbox to ensure I don't miss any messages?

Regards

JP

JP,

Sorry. I don't know of any way to combine the two sets of folders. It would be a useful feature though. Maybe in Outlook 2012?
