Default How can I get my email to download automatically?

A few weeks back my Outlook was working fine. When I opened it, there were all my emails, including the latest ones.

Now, I have to open Outlook and click on the mailbox that I want to see before it will show my emails. If I click away from Outlook to another app, I then have to re-open Outlook again and then click on the mailbox again!

Can anyone help me to get back to the position of Outlook staying open an email appearing automatically, please?

Are you saying that if you switch to say Word, Outlook will exit—ie close itself?

I'm using 365, but the setting for initial view may be the same if I recall correctly.
File > Options > Advanced > Outlook start and exit

Thanks for your reply Lugh,

What happens is that if I open something like Word, when I go back to Outlook it's still open but no emails are shown.

I've looked at your suggestion:

File > Options > Advanced > Outlook start and exit

I highlighted the folder that I wanted Outlook to open on and clicked OK. It worked! A simple solution that I didn't know existed. How it got that way in the first place, I don't know!
