Lost years of emails when first using outlook
Hi,
I have for the first time started to use Outlook. On Wednesday night I downloaded my emails (2006-2019) from my ISP's webmail. It all appeared to go well, except that I had multiple copies of all the folders - generally six complete duplicates of the Inbox and I think the same of Sent plus mostly empty folders of Trash etc. I copied all the duplicates from the various inboxes into the top one - I wasn't sure at this stage if they were exact duplicates and didn't want to lose any. I then manually deleted the duplicates, but only got about half way through - I dealt with the years 2006-2010 before sleep called. On Thursday night I came back to finish the job, but only the emails from 2014-2019 were in the Inbox. I rang my ISP support (no use at all) but during the conversation they all reappeared, so I assumed all would be OK. No, they disappeared again and now, Friday night they haven't reappeared. They have also been removed from the ISP's server. At least I can recover the 2006-2014 emails from the Trash folder, but I've still lost 4 years worth. When I looked at my Sent folder an hour or so ago, it only had emails from 2014-2019, but right now it is showing them all. Please, any suggestions for what has happened would be very gratefully received. Rob |

Hi and welcome
Are you using POP or IMAP? I know there are add-ins in Thunderbird to remove dupes. Perhaps there is also one for Outlook ?

IMAP, I think
Hi,
I don't know. I don't recall being asked when I did the initial transfer - felt like a wizard just took over and they were there before I could blink. When I moved the duplicates of the lost messages from Trash back into Inbox, they were also added to the ISP webmail. Does that indicate IMAP? So wish I'd gone to Thunderbird - I used to use it years ago. |

Normally in your mail setup you should see the word IMAP or POP in the outgoing address. If it's IMAP try setting up an alternative mail client and looking at your mail to see what you have.
Is Outlook set up to remove messages from the server or not? Try searching for "remove duplicates outlook" in Google to see how it should be done ( and perhaps why there are so many duplicates)

Sometimes I just hate computers!
Yes, it is IMAP.
I've manually solved the problem of the duplicates, and new messages are coming singly, as they should. Outlook is removing deleted messages from the webmail server. It also added back the emails I rescued from Trash (ex-duplicates) but gave them all yesterday's date and shows they all came from me - so they're totally out of sequence and I can't see who they're from. Sometimes I just hate computers! What I'm really upset about is the loss of four years' emails - a period when I was doing a lot of research and there was some gold in amongst them. And what I don't understand is how they could all be there on day one, and disappear, then re-appear, then seemingly permanently disappear on day 2. |
