Problem migrating outlook PST to a new laptop
My wife's laptop (Win 10 Home, Office 2010) recently failed but I had a complete backup. I have a spare laptop (Win 10 Pro, Office 2010) so I created a user account on it for her and restored her user directories from the backup. All her office documents are fine but getting Outlook back as it was is proving difficult.
On her laptop her google email was accessed using IMAP and her folders were stored in %USERDIR%\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.PST. On the spare laptop when I started outlook it opened the PST file and displayed the contents of her email folders, but they were not associated with her email account so couldn't be updated. I found when I created an email account for her I could not set up an account that could use the existing mailboxes, nor would it allow me to use the existing PST file. a. If I create a new IMAP account Outlook will not let me specify the existing PST file, and it creates a new one. All the messages are duplicated (except that the new inbox has no rules so every message is in the inbox). b. I tried moving the old PST file, starting Outlook with no PST file, creating a new account and then importing the messages from the restored PST. The import process ran for about 45 minutes and then stopped - process explorer showed it was no longer doing anything. At that point it had only imported a few (deleted) messages. c. I tried changing her Gmail settings to POP and creating a new POP account. This option lets me specify an existing PST file to use so I told it to use the restored PST file from her backup. It seemed to accept this but after it had run the test message successfully I saw that it had ignored this and created - and populated - a PST file in %USERDIR%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Googlema il.PST. Again, all the messages are duplicated and we don't want the PST file in AppData anyway. Somehow on her old laptop we had things configured so her email was downloaded through IMAP and stored in her Documents\Outlook Files folder. That's what I want to happen on this laptop too. (Her email was originally - a long time ago now - set up as POP but we changed to IMAP when she got an email-capable phone. And it's been working fine ever since.) A subsidiary issue - but irrelevant until I can sort out her email account - is where on her backup I might find the mail rules she had set up so that I could import them into this setup. I hope it's clear what the problem is and somebody can give me some clues as to what I'm doing wrong. |
