Default OST copy effect?

So I want to know if there is a difference rather than me going to outlook and exporting in a .pst format , why can I not just go to the data location of the .ost file click copy and then paste that to my backup location. Will it not have the same effect when I have to restore the mail?

no. not similar. ost files are part of outlook database. copying them directly makes them useless. their content turns inaccessible. if you need to transfer them safely to a drive "safely" offline, converting them to pst is the only way out. either export them directly to pst through outlook or you could buy any good third party tool to convert the ost files to pst.

hope this brings some clarity.
