Default 2 pst files

Hi all,
I have Outlook 2010, win10, 64-bit, but 2 PST files:
Directory of C:\outlook
21/06/2017 12:55 AM 1,277,903,872 Outlook.pst

Directory of C:\Users\Sid\Documents\Outlook Files
21/06/2017 12:56 AM 525,312 Outlook.pst

The first relates to old big PST from my old PC, same size now as before, but it has different date/time stamp.
No great problem for now, except what about backing it up (in case PC fails)?
I assume back up both PST's including folder names, fair enough.
But what about restoring to a future PC - Outlook assumes one PST when restoring, so how do I restore both PST files?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Graham
I managed to follow the instructions to back up, which I could have done manually, like I did with old pc.
The main point is restoring these backups in future, when there are 2 PST files.
Currently we Home/Open/"Open Outlook Data File", but which pst do we choose, and what do we do with the other one?

I thought we had done this in another thread?
You open the PST. The one you want to use should be set as the default and the other can be closed.

Previously I had 1 PST file and you advised to Open it not Import it.
Now I have 2 PST files (if I back up and restore onto another PC), so big difference... because I understand you only can only open 1 pst file.

You can have any number of PST files open, but only one can be the default. If memory serves, Outlook 2010 will create a new PST file for each e-mail account, unless you specifically tell it to use the default data store. If you are not collecting data in the PST file file that is not the default, close it until you need information from it.

In all my previous PC's I have only ever had one PST, and I'm finding it very confusing having 2 PST files... how did this happen? Is it because my new PC is 64-bit?
Is it possible I can just combine these 2 PST files into 1?

You have installed Outlook and created a new profile which has created the initial PST file. Then you have opened the original PST file, so now you have two open. You need to copy any data from the first to the second. Make the second both the default and the data store for your messages and then close the new (first) PST file. Then you will have one.

Hi Graham,
Thanks, I would be delighted to merge them.
So to be clear you want me to copy from the very large first pst ("Outlook" profile) to the small second pst ("Outlook Data File" profile, which just has a few empty folders)?
If so, do I drag each folder over?
If so, do I delete duplicate folders (eg Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Deleted) in small profile, before copying from large profile?
Thanks, Sid

No! Copy the contents of the folders from the smaller file to same locations in the larger one. If you have only recently re-installed there should not be much in it that needs to be copied. Make the larger one the default. Then close the smaller one. Don't delete anything. You can always open the smaller file again should you have missed something.

Hi Graham,
The smaller profile is empty of emails/items, just some empty folders.
I did as you suggested, but when I tried to change the big pst to default, it came up with a warning screen
"the default outlook data file contains the calendar that appears..."
I googled on that, and it said to ignore it, and it seems to have worked.
So now all need to do is backup one PST... yippee!
I think that is all - thanks, Sid
