Default Lost Data file after trying to set Exchange account

I have tried to connect to a remote Exchange Server - my other Outlook accounts are all POP3. The connection failed, and now I get the "Outlook cannot start because a data file to send and receive mail cannot be found." I have tried to use the Mail icon in Control Panel to reset my default file, each time I set it, I get the dialog saying I am changing my default file, and still when I open Outlook I get the same error. I can't find any other information on what to try next. I have deleted the Exchange account from Outlook.

I have got rid of the error by nominating a different file as default (SavedMail.pst) and now I can see 2 different mailboxes in Outlook. Odd, but I can live with this. Question now is can I now safely add an exchange account. This is on a remote server (at a company I do some sub-contract work for) and I want to use it in the same way as I use my POP3 accounts - ie to connect every few minutes and download any mail to my outlook file.
