Default Are Outlook.com syncs with Outlook Desktop/App encrypted?

I'm wondering if I should be worried about checking email over public WiFi.

I know that the Outlook Desktop's pst files aren't encrypted and you can move the files around and open them. But are they encrypted during the transfer from the server to your computer in first leg of it's journey?

Thanks!
