Default Finding and correction spelling dictionaries

I was proofreading an email I'm sending at work, and noticed that I'd written "intsead". The odd thing is that Outlook hadn't red-squiggly-underlined it as a spelling error.

I have to believe (don't I?) that somehow "intsead" got into my custom dictionary at some point. So I should (shouldn't I?) go find this word in one of Outlook's spelling dictionaries, and eliminate.

But so far I've found only one custom dictionary, and "intsead" isn't in there. I have Outlook 2010 on that machine; I started with the main Outlook window, went to File, Options, chose the Mail tab, clicked the button for "Spelling and Autocorrect...", then "Custom dictionaries...". CUSTOM.DIC is the only one; I selected "Edit Word List". If "intsead" isn't in there, why is Outlook accepting it as a correct spelling?

Are you sure that you have spell check enabled, as it errors here?

It errored "intsead" for me, too, while I was typing the question here. But I use Firefox, which doesn't share dictionaries with Outlook; I wouldn't expect them both to accept the same mistake. Truthfully, I didn't check Outlook's spellcheck setting because I'm utterly confident Outlook marks other typos—so spellcheck must be turned on, right?

But I use two computers for three different clients. Maybe—just maybe—it's been off on this laptop and I didn't notice, and my confidence that it's on is because my other computer marks typos. Won't hurt to check. But seriously I don't expect to find it's that easy.

I can't look right now; I'm just checking mail one last time before packing the car for an all-day trip as far as the Mississippi, and the other laptop, the one on which this occurred, is already taken apart. But tomorrow or Monday.

The image clip was the result of pasting the text from your message into an Outlook e-mail message. It was Outlook's spell check not the browser's that flagged the errant Word.

Nice idea, gmayor, and well explained, but it won't work. Here's the sequence:

1) I was typing in Outlook and started proofreading an email I'd just written. I noticed that Outlook did not red-underline "intsead", as it should. I supposed that I must accidentally have put "intsead" into Outlook's custom dictionary; I looked around in Outlook for that dictionary so I could delete "intsead" from it. All I could find was CUSTOM.DIC, and "intsead" wasn't in there.

2) In Firefox I came to this forum to ask where else I might find the offending dictionary. I carefully typed out "intsead" each time while posting the question, and each time Firefox red-underlined it—proving that Firefox and Outlook use a different dictionary, but then we would have assumed that.

3) Once I posted the message it was no longer subject to spell-checking, so if you look at my original 05-20-2016 04:05 PM post you'll see "intsead" is not red-underlined there.

4) You copied the text of my message into Outlook, and Outlook, using your spelling dictionary, red-underlined "intsead", even though mine did not.

The difference, I'm sure, is in the dictionary that contains the words that we tell spell-check to accept. When spellcheck red-underlines a word I've typed, it's because it doesn't recognize it. Usually that's because it's a proper noun or idiosyncratic abbreviation, such as "Thornqvist" or "odcdi", that the spell checker cannot be expected to know; in such cases I ignore the red underlining or, if I'm going to be using that word a lot over the next months or years, tell spellcheck to add that word to the dictionary.

For you, Outlook flags "intsead" as a misspelling, of course—it would for everyone. The fact that it doesn't for me leads me to believe that some time in the past I must have carelessly told spellcheck to add "intsead" to the dictionary, and I've only now noticed it. My question: Where to find that dictionary?

There's another explanation and that is that the style used to type the message is formatted with the no-proofing option. With a new message open Format Text, Right click the Style name in the quick styles group (probably Normal) and then Modify > Format > Language and ensure that the 'Do not check spelling option' is unchecked.

If that's not it, check File > Options > Proofing > Custom dictionaries and there you will find listed all the custom dictionaries in use. They are language specific and all that are checked are in use when spell checking text of the appropriate language. Words may be added only to the default dictionary.
